This form of bodywork, also known as structural integration, was developed by Ida Rolf Ph.D, an innovative thinker and biochemist who needed to find an alternative type therapy for herself and two sons. Dr. Rolf believed that proper alignment was integral for the body to heal itself.
Structural Integration works with fascia. Remember in an anatomy text book, the human with all the muscles? What is not accurately shown in that image is fascia, a type of connective tissue that wraps around all of our muscles, every individual muscle, every individual muscle fiber and then connects to the bone. It holds our entire being together. Interwoven in the superficial fascia is 90% of our nervous system. This is why when people stand up from a session, their body takes on a new, more integrated shape and feel.
This work is remarkable. It is more than manual therapy, it is a way to process how we stand in our own bodies. It has the power to move holding patterns, both emotional and physical, and my favorite part, it is a tool for empowerment. When an individual is able to inhabit their body with less stress, that in itself is a spark for transformation.
The rhythm of our breath is the rhythm of our life. While breathing is an involuntary process in our body, knowing certain ways to alter our breathing pattern can have profound effects. Such as:
-alter and process emotions
-decrease low back pain/spinal pain
-invoke energy and focus or relaxation
-build somatic awareness
When we learn about the breath, we take it where ever we go. The breath becomes a tool for our life. I trained with Patrick McKeown in Oxygen Advantage and Buteyko methods.
